Pacific ALLIES

Pacific ALLIES is a program where students from ALLIES travel to the Republic of the Marshall Islands to conduct research at the intersection of climate change and national security. Working with cadets from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, participants have investigated measures to mitigate the effects of droughts, learned about the climatic impacts to Tuna populations, and met with military commanders about resilience build measures on base. Traveling through the Marshall Islands, students have a unique opportunity to experience international relations firsthand, working with stakeholders on important ecological and political issues.

The Lei-ing was part of a ceremony at the beginning of going to an outer island. It’s bad luck to enter an island without a proper welcoming ceremony, according to the Marshallese, so here the group is being welcomed to the island.
